Mechanical Design Engineer – CAD Specialist

About the role

EMBL Grenoble is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with strong CAD expertise to join its Instrumentation Team. You will work on high‑precision scientific instruments for macromolecular X‑ray crystallography, SAXS, and Cryo‑EM/ET, collaborating with international partners and contributing to the full development lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

• Design robotic and mechatronic systems for constrained, vacuum and cryogenic environments using CAD tools.
• Develop and optimise precision mechanical components and assemblies.
• Coordinate manufacturing activities in‑house and with external suppliers.
• Assemble, integrate and commission new instruments on site and at partner beamlines.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation and manufacturing drawings.
• Collaborate closely with engineers, scientists, technicians and external partners to meet project deadlines.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, CAD Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field.
• Proactive, self‑motivated and able to present technical solutions.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills in English; working knowledge of French is a plus.

Required skills

• SolidWorks (including simulation and analysis tools).
• General CAD software proficiency.
• Design experience for vacuum and cryogenic environments.
• Precision mechanical design.
• Knowledge of manufacturing methods, tolerancing and assembly processes.
• Basic understanding of physics, electronics and optics.
