Thermal Modeling & Cryogenic Systems Engineer

About the role

As a Thermal Modeling & Cryogenic Systems Engineer you will own the thermal architecture of complex cryogenic quantum hardware. You will develop system‑level thermal models, manage thermal budgets, and ensure scalability and stability of next‑generation quantum computers.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain thermal models for qubits, wiring, passive components and cryo‑electronics across all cryogenic stages.
• Identify thermal constraints, evaluate architecture options and guide design decisions with system engineers and physicists.
• Own the thermal budget, perform trade‑off analyses of qubit architectures, wiring schemes and material choices.
• Define and execute validation experiments, correlate predictions with measurements and implement corrective actions.
• Design thermalization strategies for signals, wiring and cryo‑electronics to minimise heat loads while preserving signal integrity.
• Participate in integration and operation of cryogenic test platforms, including instrumentation and thermal characterisation.

Required profile

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Cryogenics or related field with industry experience, or MSc with at least 5 years of industry experience.
• Strong background in thermal engineering and cryogenics, with proven experience building and maintaining thermal models.
• Hands‑on experience with dilution refrigerators and multi‑stage cryogenic platforms.
• Comfortable working across quantum hardware, electronics and systems teams.

Required skills

• Thermal modeling and simulation (analytical and numerical methods)
• Cryogenic system design and thermal budget management
• Experience with RF and DC wiring, signal thermalisation and heat sinking at cryogenic temperatures
• Python and/or Matlab for data analysis and model automation
• Experimental validation of thermal models
