About the role

The Institut des Nanotechnologies de Lyon (INL) is offering a three‑year PhD position focused on the intelligent growth of thermoelectric oxides using operando‑assisted epitaxy combined with machine‑learning techniques. The project, part of the CINEMA initiative, starts in October 2026 and aims to develop new materials with enhanced thermoelectric performance.

Key responsibilities

• Perform epitaxial growth of oxide thin films (e.g., BaSnO3) using techniques such as PLD or MBE.
• Implement operando monitoring to collect real‑time data during synthesis.
• Develop and train machine‑learning models to predict growth outcomes and optimize process parameters.
• Analyse experimental data, interpret results, and prepare scientific publications.
• Present findings at conferences and collaborate with the research team.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a closely related field.
• Strong interest in thermoelectric materials and data‑driven research.
• Ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary team.
• Proficiency in English (scientific writing) and French is a plus.

Required skills

• Epitaxial growth techniques (PLD, MBE).
• Operando monitoring and in‑situ characterization.
• Machine‑learning fundamentals and model development.
• Python programming for data analysis and model training.
• Data analysis and visualization.
