Senior Counsel, France

About the role

OpenAI is seeking an experienced lawyer to serve as the country counsel for France, focusing on regulatory and policy matters that affect its AI products and operations.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on French and EU regulatory developments and assess their business implications.
• Develop legal positions and practical recommendations in collaboration with policy, product, privacy and other legal teams.
• Support regulatory and policy engagement with French and EU regulators and policymakers, preparing briefing materials and consultation responses.
• Provide broader French legal support for local partnerships, research collaborations, marketing, events and commercial initiatives.
• Coordinate French country legal support for governance, office development, employment and workplace compliance, involving specialist teams as needed.

Required profile

• Law degree (Master 2 in Law, Bac+5 or equivalent) with substantial experience advising on French law across commercial, employment, corporate and operational matters.
• Relevant in‑house, law‑firm, government or institutional experience, including regulatory engagement and policy development.
• Proven ability to interpret complex legislation, develop clear legal recommendations and prepare persuasive briefing materials.
• Strong judgment to balance regulatory risk with practical business needs and know when to involve specialists.
• Excellent communication in French and English, able to explain complex legal issues to senior stakeholders.
• Capacity to manage varied workload, prioritize business needs and maintain coverage of French operational matters.
• Interest in AI and emerging technologies, comfortable working through uncertainty.
