Remote Backend Java Engineer

About the role

Airship builds a no-code, AI-powered platform used by major brands to deliver personalized cross-channel customer experiences. As a Backend Java Engineer you will design, develop and support distributed, low-latency services that process continuous event streams and analytical workloads across terabytes of data. The infrastructure runs on Google Cloud Platform with Java microservices and SQL and NoSQL databases, and you will join a core engineering team shaping the company's technical foundations.

Key responsibilities

• Design data schemas and take ownership of data semantics
• Maintain, improve and scale Java APIs and distributed services
• Investigate performance issues using server metrics, application data and system behaviour
• Improve the reliability, testability and maintainability of backend systems
• Partner with product and engineering teams on technical design and implementation
• Help define technical standards across teams
• Lead and own large-scale releases and technical projects
• Use AI as a technical assistant to draft development plans and investigate problems, then critically assess AI-generated suggestions for accuracy, security and suitability

Required profile

• At least three years of experience designing, operating and maintaining distributed systems
• Professional fluency in spoken and written French (required)
• Experience leading significant releases or technical projects
• Candidates must live in France or the United Kingdom and hold the right to work there; the role is fully remote, with up to 10% travel possible

Required skills

• Strong Java development skills
• Unit testing, code reviews, documentation and Git-based version control
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices
• Nice to have: JVM performance tuning, Google Cloud Platform, distributed NoSQL databases or key-value stores, strong Linux administration
