CIFRE PhD – Numerical Modeling of Fire Dynamics and Flame‑Wall Interaction

About the role

Airbus is looking for a PhD candidate to advance numerical combustion methods for fire‑proofing aircraft structures, with a focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuels. Based in the Propulsion Center of Competence in Toulouse, the research will address the challenge of predicting heat fluxes on walls during turbulent combustion.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and enhance the AVBP solver for multi‑phase fuel injection, flame‑wall interaction and aerothermal/radiative coupling.
• Apply Large Eddy Simulation (LES) techniques to model turbulent combustion interacting with structures.
• Collaborate with an international research team and receive academic supervision from CERFACS.
• Analyse simulation results to assess fire resistance of aircraft components using SAF.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or equivalent in fluid dynamics, combustion, aerospace engineering or a related field.
• Strong interest in decarbonisation and sustainable aviation technologies.
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, international research environment.

Required skills

• Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for turbulent flows.
• AVBP solver or similar CFD tools.
• Numerical combustion modeling.
• Fuel multi‑phase injection modelling.
• Flame‑wall interaction and aerothermal/radiative coupling.
• Basic knowledge of artificial intelligence methods for data analysis.
