Urban Food Systems Consultant

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a consultant to support its Urban Food Systems team in delivering SDG 12.3 objectives. Based in Paris, the role focuses on enhancing collaboration among member states, cities, and food‑system stakeholders to reduce food loss and waste.

Key responsibilities

• Operationalise the Food Waste Breakthrough Roadmap, facilitating technical exchange and capacity building between Brazil and Japan.
• Support day‑to‑day activities of the Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition (I‑CAN).
• Lead fundraising efforts, including the initiation of a new GEF Food Waste project and development of country‑specific GEF proposals.
• Coordinate events and activities for the One Planet Network Sustainable Food Systems Programme, including MAC meetings and global conferences.
• Provide coordination services for the Food is Never Waste Coalition, managing meetings, strategy development, speaker engagement, and communications.
• Develop and implement a multi‑stakeholder advocacy approach for the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste, and support related advocacy events.
• Contribute to publication development, launch activities, and thought‑leadership outputs.

Required profile

• Proven experience in international environmental programmes, preferably within UNEP or similar UN agencies.
• Strong background in food loss and waste reduction, sustainable food consumption, or related climate‑action initiatives.
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including governments, cities, NGOs, and the private sector.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills, with experience in organizing high‑level events and advocacy campaigns.
