Senior Backend Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)

About the role

Pennylane is looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to help build reliable, scalable, and user‑focused financial products for millions of entrepreneurs. You will work in a remote‑first, Europe‑wide team, shaping technical delivery and mentoring peers.

Key responsibilities

• Understand and frame user and product problems to deliver simple, pragmatic solutions.
• Lead end‑to‑end technical deliveries, from design through production deployment.
• Investigate and resolve complex production issues using monitoring, observability, and data analysis tools.
• Design and evolve robust solutions, improving performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Provide deep expertise in Ruby on Rails while quickly becoming autonomous on new initiatives.
• Improve engineering practices via code reviews, pair programming, documentation, RFCs, and AI‑assisted development.
• Act as a role model, sharing knowledge and giving actionable feedback to raise team standards.
• Collaborate across squads, unblock technical topics, and communicate progress and risks.
• Contribute to the Pennylane tech community through content, meetups, and incident resolution.

Required profile

• 7‑8 years of hands‑on experience with Ruby on Rails.
• Strong product and business understanding with a passion for solving complex problems.
• Collaborative team player with clear communication and ownership mindset.
• Enjoy tackling challenging accounting‑related problems.
• Excellent communication skills to articulate ideas clearly.
