Lawyer – Turkish Law

About the role

The European Court of Human Rights is seeking a qualified lawyer specialised in Turkish law to join one of its country‑specific units. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced judges, lawyers and administrative staff, handling applications and case‑files that relate to Turkey under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of case‑files, ensuring compliance with the Court’s procedural deadlines and internal guidelines.
• Examine applications, maintain correspondence with applicants, governments and third parties, and prepare files for review by a Judge‑rapporteur.
• Draft legal documents such as judgments, decisions, minutes, reports and notes in English or French.
• Attend Court sessions, present cases and contribute to oral hearings.
• Conduct legal research on the Court’s case‑law and Turkish national law, and disseminate relevant findings.
• Report to a Senior Legal Adviser on progress, risks and opportunities, and maintain professional contacts with counterparts.

Required profile

• Law degree (« Hukuk Lisans Diploması ») that qualifies for judicial or legal professions in Turkey.
• Minimum two years of professional legal experience, preferably in the Turkish judicial service or an international organisation.
• Native‑level proficiency in Turkish and very good knowledge of English or French (and knowledge of the other official language of the Council of Europe).
• Citizenship of a Council of Europe member state.

Required skills

• Ability to draft clear and precise legal texts in English or French.
