Remote Sensing Scientist – Methane Emissions (Consultant)

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Remote Sensing Scientist to support its International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) MARS (Methane Alert and Response System). The consultant will work remotely for a 12‑month contract, providing accurate satellite‑derived methane emission information and helping to notify stakeholders for mitigation actions.

Key responsibilities

• Process and analyse high‑resolution satellite data to detect and quantify methane plumes.
• Support the MARS notification workflow by identifying large emission sources and collaborating with regional case managers.
• Improve existing plume‑quantification methods and develop new satellite‑derived methane parameters as needed.
• Integrate new satellite datasets into the MARS platform and contribute to technical research on methane remote‑sensing methodologies.
• Work closely with IMEO remote‑sensing and data‑science teams to ensure data quality and actionable outputs.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in remote sensing, atmospheric science, geosciences or a related field.
• Proven experience with satellite data processing and methane emission analysis.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently in a remote setting.
• Excellent communication skills to convey technical findings to diverse stakeholders.

Required skills

• Remote sensing techniques for atmospheric gases.
• Satellite data analysis and processing.
• Methane plume quantification and attribution.
• Data processing and statistical analysis.
