PhD in High-Temperature Properties of Biochar for Energy Storage

About the role

This PhD position focuses on investigating the high‑temperature kinetic, thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of graphitic biomass‑derived biocarbon (biochar) for energy‑storage applications. The research is part of an ERC Advanced Grant project and will be conducted at the RAPSODEE Center (CNRS joint unit) in Albi, France.

Key responsibilities

• Design and carry out experiments to measure kinetic, thermodynamic and thermophysical parameters of biochar materials.
• Characterize biochar structure and composition using techniques such as X‑ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and spectroscopy.
• Analyze thermal behavior with TGA, DSC and related high‑temperature analytical tools.
• Interpret data, develop models, and assess energy‑storage performance of biocarbon composites.
• Prepare scientific reports, publish research articles and present findings at conferences.

Required profile

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or a related field.
• Strong interest in sustainable energy materials and carbon‑based composites.
• Ability to work independently in a research environment and collaborate with an international team.
• Proficiency in English for scientific communication.

Required skills

• Thermal analysis techniques (TGA, DSC).
• Materials characterization (XRD, SEM, spectroscopy).
• Data analysis and modeling (MATLAB, Python or similar).
• Laboratory safety and high‑temperature experimental procedures.
