Legal Counsel – Insurance & Reinsurance

About the role

AXA XL is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its French legal team, supporting underwriting and operations across France and Spain. You will act as a trusted business partner, providing day‑to‑day legal advice and ensuring contractual compliance for a range of insurance and reinsurance activities.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Legal France team and Senior Legal Counsel with routine legal queries from underwriting, operations, and international colleagues.
• Serve as the primary contact for underwriting departments, delivering business‑partner‑style legal guidance.
• Review, draft, and validate a variety of contractual documents, including reinsurance contracts, confidentiality agreements, mandates, brokerage protocols, and commercial contracts.
• Propose legally sound solutions that meet client and partner needs while complying with applicable law.
• Manage projects and deadlines, especially related to new product launches and monitoring.
• Conduct legal watch activities, contribute to legal culture updates, and train underwriters, assistants, CDLs, and claims handlers.
• Assist with multinational program issues and support AXA XL’s international transversal teams.
• Coordinate with external counsel and report to the Head of Legal France & Southern Europe.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in French private law, preferably with a focus on insurance law.
• Professional experience in an insurance company, brokerage firm, or law firm.
• Broad knowledge of insurance law, reinsurance, contract law, and tort law.
• Excellent written communication, especially for contractual matters.
• Ability to adapt to a fluid environment, work independently, and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong analytical, synthesis, and detail‑orientation skills.
• Fluency in both English and French, oral and written.
