Senior Climate Change Mitigation Modelling Expert for Tanzania LT-LEDS

About the role

UNEP is seeking a senior expert to lead climate change mitigation modelling for Tanzania’s Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS). The consultant will develop a fully calibrated set of low-emission scenarios that will become the quantitative backbone of the national strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Produce a nationally owned GHG baseline and business-as-usual scenario for Tanzania.
• Design sector-specific net-zero-by-2050 pathways covering energy, transport, AFOLU, industry, waste, blue economy and human settlements.
• Integrate carbon sequestration, nature-based solutions, cost‑benefit and macro‑economic analyses into each pathway.
• Assess adaptation, biodiversity, investment implications and Article 6 carbon‑market opportunities of alternative scenarios.
• Deliver structured capacity‑transfer to the Vice‑President’s Office – Division of Environment (VPO‑DoE) and the National Climate Change Management Centre (NCMC).
• Prepare modelling annexes for inclusion in the final LT‑LEDS document.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in climate science, environmental economics, energy systems or a related field.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in climate mitigation modelling and scenario development at national or regional level.
• Proven track record of delivering integrated low‑emission pathways for multiple sectors.
• Experience working with government agencies and international donors.
