Climate Change and Environmental Expert

About the role

UN‑Habitat is seeking a Climate Change and Environmental Expert to provide normative and technical expertise on urban planning, finance and economic aspects linked to climate change adaptation and mitigation. The consultant will support the Urban Lab and Country Offices, focusing on delivering climate‑resilient solutions for cities, especially in Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver technical guidance on territorial and urban planning, integrating climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
• Assist in the design and implementation of climate‑related projects for the Regional Advisory & Projects Support Section.
• Contribute to proposal development and engagement with vertical funding mechanisms.
• Support capacity‑building activities for regional and country offices, emphasizing sustainable urban development.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams within the Urban Lab to translate innovative concepts into actionable solutions.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in environmental science, urban planning, climate change, or a related field.
• Proven experience in climate change adaptation and mitigation within urban contexts.
• Familiarity with the challenges faced by LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS.
• Strong analytical and policy‑oriented background.

Required skills

• Expertise in climate‑change adaptation and mitigation frameworks.
• Knowledge of urban planning and territorial development processes.
• Understanding of financing mechanisms for climate‑resilient projects.
