Mechanical Engineer – Advanced Scientific Instrumentation

About the role

You will join a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians developing cutting‑edge instrumentation for beamlines and the accelerator complex. The position focuses on high‑performance mechanical engineering projects that require ultra‑high precision, opto‑mechanics, vacuum and cooling technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct feasibility and mechanical design studies for beamline components, high‑stability supports, mirrors, monochromators and precision motion systems.
• Perform engineering calculations and produce detailed mechanical drawings.
• Coordinate procurement, manufacturing, testing and installation of equipment up to commissioning.
• Collaborate with infrastructure, electronics, vacuum, alignment and assembly teams during installation.
• Initially contribute as a project team member; after an adaptation period, lead complete projects autonomously and act as mechanical correspondent for two ESRF beamlines.

Required profile

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• 7‑10 years of relevant professional experience.
• Strong autonomy, organisational skills and ability to work in a demanding technical environment.
• Fluent English (working language at ESRF).

Required skills

• SolidWorks or equivalent mechanical CAD software.
• Mechanical drafting and design.
• Engineering calculations.
